Church Of Misery is probably the most interesting modern doom metal act in my eyes, save for the eternal and much more accessible Black Sabbath. Fans of psychedelic rock and the stoner scene should find this band quite accessible, and their most recent release to be one of their very best. If you are interested, I might suggest you many other quite diversified doom metal bands from Japan.

It encumbers the very soul of metal, but at the same time makes it’s roots in hard and psychedelic rock pretty clear. Hence, I think Houses of the Unholy is one of a select few albums any metalhead can enjoy. It’s also a great evidence that there are lots of bands capable of writing music you can sink your teeth into these days. When any of my friends ask me for some modern music to get into, this is almost always what comes directly to mind. I honestly don’t think you should hesitate on this gem at all. If you’re into metal (or at the very least, extreme metal) then buy this album. I’m pretty sure that persuasion is driven by less than the majority of personal fanboyism and more than the majority of the quality of the album.
